saved his career and shocked the world last weekend at by taking out young contender Ryan Bader with a first round guillotine choke.

Better known for his ground-and-pound, Ortiz has long possessed some legitimate submission chops, whether or not he often chose to employ them. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’s” Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach, Ricardo Demente, recently told Tatame.com that he wasn’t at all surprised with his student’s submission victory.

“It couldn’t have been better… A win by submission, a jiu-jitsu coup, and really well trained by us… I’ve picked the positions that would fit his game, positions that he’d get quickly and could be effective when the time comes,” Demente said. “You can’t predict a MMA fight, but I was hoping he’d try to use he’d go for the submission. I wasn’t that surprised because we’ve trained a lot, so anything could happen.”

No news yet on when Ortiz will return to action or against whom, but keep an eye out for the resurrected veteran’s grappling chops next time he enters the cage.
