Brock Lesnar underwent surgery on Friday to reduce symptoms from the digestive disease that forced him out of UFC 131, but he is still on track to return to action as early as January.

Dana White announced during UFC 130 that Lesnar had 12 inches of his colon removed in a successful operation following a Thursday appointment at the Mayo Clinic, where he’s been undergoing treatment for diverticulitis that first affected him in 2009.

Lesnar (5-2) was scheduled to fight fellow Ultimate Fighter 13 coach Junior dos Santos at June’s UFC 131 for a shot at heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez, who defeated Lesnar for the title in October.
