Brazilian MMA site Tatame.com, is reporting that UFC President Dana White will be in Rio De Janeiro and is expected to announce a UFC event in the city sometime in 2011. The press conference, which will be held at the Palacio da Cidade, will be held December 15 and will be broadcast live via the Internet.
Dana White will be joined by UFC featherweight, middleweight, and light-heavyweight champions Jose Aldo, Anderson Silva, and Maurício Rua, as well as Vitor Belfort, UFC 1 title holder and MMA pioneer Royce Gracie, Lorenzo Fertitta, and Rio De Janeiro’s Mayor Eduardo Paes.
The news comes less than a week after Brazilian Military Police launched a massive operation into the Alemao favelas (or slums). Rio De Janeiro has faced increased scrutiny to clean up the drug and weapons trafficking that have overrun the city’s favelas since it will host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic games. Police forces are expected to provide security in Alemao for a year.
No word on whether or not this will cause issues for welterweight contender Paulo Thiago, a member of the city’s special forces group BOPE(Batalhão de Operações Especiais).
